Nico Dettmann is the Head of the Space Transportation Department in the Directorate of Human Spaceflight at ESA’s Space Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. He is responsible for the ATV Programme including ATV Operations and the development of the MPCV-ESM, Europe’s contribution to the cooperation with NASA in the ORION Programme. In his 10 years at ESA he was in charge of the ATV Phase-E Programme from the very beginning, managing the transition from development to recurring production and merging the ATV Operations with the ATV flight segment activities. He was also the ATV 2 mission manager. These tasks include amongst others the procurement of the launch service and the coordination of ATV relevant interfaces with the ISS partners. Since 2013 his department is also in charge of the development of the European Service Module in cooperation with NASA. It is designed from ATV and Space Shuttle heritage combined with new components developed in Europe. The ESM represents Europe’s first manned programme participation beyond low Earth orbit. Prior to his work at ESA, Nico Dettmann spent 14 years at AIRBUS Defence and Space (former Astrium GmbH), where he managed in his last function the Ariane 5 Upper Composite Development and Production. He holds a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Applied Science in Aachen and a post-graduate Master of Business and Engineering.
